Is this Sanitary?
« on: July 04, 2010, 12:06:38 AM »

I was looking at an online shop that sells Glitter Tattoo Kits in Europe and I noticed they sell Rubbing Alcohol in lip gloss containers with the sponge wands. I usually use a small spray bottle and cotton balls/pads to cleanse the skin.

Do you think it is safe/sanitary to use the alcohol with the sponge wand and then reuse on the next person?
I can see how it would be faster to use this method and would reduce the need to keep purchasing/wasting cotton balls.

What do you guys think?

P.S. I posted this on another FP forum so if you've already seen it--sorry--I just want to get as much feedback as possible on this subject.

If you think about it each time you replace the wand/stick it will be cleaned/sanitized with the alcohol, it will dilute it slightly each time I would imagine but it will be well finished before it is ineffective Grin.

I am a phlebotomist and alot of what the public sees is perception.  All alcohol is is a fast drying cleansing agent with an emphasis on fast drying.  It is painful in wounds and is not used for much more than cleansing.  As face painters we cleanse to insure adhesion and remove schmutz and not cross contaminate in case of presence of something unseen, so we want to be clean.  I go to great lengths to let my customers SEE the steps I take to care for them as individuals by changing out my water, using hand sanitizer, letting them see me offer wipies to schmarmy faces and advertising that professional face paints have an antibacterial quality and that I won't paint anyone who is clearly sick or broken out.  With all that in mind, wether it does kill bacteria on the reusable wand or not, I think I would continue to individualize the cleaning process by continuing to open an alcohol wipe per person.  Face paint or blood draw, I want new and clean.
Just my opinion!

I agree that I think it would get cleaned each time, but i still would prefer cotton balls. I just switched to a press bottle for alcohol. You might like that better than spray. I bought mine at Amerikan body art. You just push the cotton ball down on top of the bottle once or twice to wet it. It also locks for storage. I used it last weekend when I was doing lots of glitters and it really was an improvement over my last system! I have seen these used in like nail polish places, but didn't think of one for my alcohol until I saw it on that site.

Just came back from a manicure.  She was using one of those press bottles where when you press the top with a cotton ball the ball gets saturated.  If you are fastidious about a fresh cotton ball with each customer then this seems like a reasonable degree of cleanliness.

Press away, ladies!

I've been using the cotton balls for the last year. I find when I'm in a hurry sometimes I get "fuzz" stuck to my hands and I don't realize it sometimes until I'm applying the stencil and I see it sticking to the stencil---it is kind of annoying and slows me down. I can't find a good price for the alcohol wipes on Island or I would just buy them. If I find a good price online then I get ripped on shipping. I'm thinking I might try using Q-tips with the sponge wand vial next time--this would keep the fuzz from ever touching my hands.

Okay I don't like this way at all. The sponge wand looks so nasty.
I'm going to stick with my Alcohol spray bottle.
