The language barrier & emails
« on: May 27, 2010, 06:46:51 AM »

I've been working with a customer the past week or two, trying to book her party.  Normally I can muddle my way through, even if it's difficult to understand.  With this customer I truly couldn't understand many important things she was saying and I had to ask her to continuously repeat herself.  I know I get annoyed when I have to keep repeating myself, so I wondered how it was affecting her.

When I realized I couldn't even understand the street or street number where the event was taking place, I tried to get her to email me.  My email is listed on my site and I thought she'd have better luck getting to me that way, but she seemed to prefer me to email her.  We went back and forth over her email address over and over again, finally got it and sent her off an email, for her to send me a message with the details.

I didn't hear anything back from her, so I let it go at that.  She calls yesterday and I could understand her a lot better.   Huh?  I thought that was weird, maybe it was a bad connection last time?  Anyway, she went ahead and booked.  Success!

Emails are so tricky to get exactly right over the phone.  I wonder how many times I've taken one down incorrectly and that's why I haven't heard back from the customer.
