Reduced rates
« on: May 18, 2010, 06:33:54 AM »

I've been getting so many requests lately from people wanting me to donate my time or work at a reduced rate.  There's only so many I can do and then I have to hold back, because I have to support my family too.

I had another request, so I sent them what I decided would be my standard charity rate... $70 an hour with a 2 hour minimum.

Here's what they wrote back:

"Hi Sherry,

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly!  I'm afraid that rate is out of our budget...our other girl was only going to be $15 per hour if we let her put out a tip jar.  We will have to check with some other options.  Appreciate it!

Paige"

$15 an hour?  I was amazed at that!  I'm not too worried, because I know the people that appreciate what I can offer will pay and they will come around, but $15 an hour?  Do you think this was a professional?  This is what I wrote back.

"You're welcome.  Smiley

Take care,
Sherry"

WOW - $15.00 per hour is incredibly low.  It almost wouldn't be worth your while to do a job like that.  By the time you get everything ready, drive, set up, do the job, pack up and drive back you would almost be paying them to do the job.  It is my experience that you really don't get tips at a job like that either.  That makes me sad.  I'm about to spend a ton of money to go to the convention.  If you spend money on training and marketing and all of the extras i.e., tent, costumes or logo shirts, signage, your chair, supplies, etc. there is no way you can work for that amount of money.

yeah your right Vi. Just like there is a so stupid you tube video, with some gal showing what you would need to do face painting and then she does some, and then I spoted acylics on her table, you know the little round pots, heck for all I know it also looked like the kind of paints that comes into the model airplane kits!

Yep, I don't think people know how much expense goes into face painting professionally!  I figure they won't find many who will paint for that.  If so, they'll eventually get weeded out, because no one can live on that.

well, i don't see how anyone can like to be painted with crappy acrylic paint.....it always cracks and will not hold up to anything...besides you just can't get the same effects....besides, eventually they will realize that those of us who are serious about our business are worth paying for...the ones that charge peanuts are definately not serious or they would have a little more pride about what they work for....
