Acrylics and face painting

JUST CURIOUS...

Several of us have started using acrylic paints and then came over to the other side of the fence. Great now we can do full faces and work close to the eyes.

BUT SERIOUSLY,
Has anyone ever heard of someone getting sick from acrylics. I used them for years without an allergic reaction or issue of any kind. Worst thing is that they crack and peel off. Heck, the second time out with snazaroo paint, I had a boy whose batman logo left a red, swollen, itchy logo on his face after the paint was gone.

Have there been studies on the side effects of acrylics? Just curious.

Very interesting! I also used acrylics for over 25 years! I had a woodcraft business, but I also had four daughters ages now 30 - 27- 22- 19, so I would always go into the schools and do volunteer face painting for the different holidays and school events, and come to think of it! I had never heard of anyone having any trouble with the acrylics! But I only did cheek art and arm art. never had painted any close to teh eyes! But mays ya wonder huh!

I don't know of anyone doing a test with acrylics and I think it's because they're not really made to be used on the face or skin.  When they make acrylics, they don't make it to comply with cosmetic laws, so there are ingredients in acrylic paints that are banned for use in any food, drug or cosmetic.  I've never used acrylics for face painting, so I've never had the experience to know if anyone had any reactions to it.  I know I wouldn't want to be painted with craft paint.

I think certain people have sensitive skin and can have allergic reactions to any of the professional brands.  But these are mild I think compared to using something that could contain known carcinogens.

Just my 2 cents.

I'll go ahead and split this and make it its own topic.

Would have never used acrylics for full face. I would never put paint near anyone's eyes. On the arms and cheek seemed harmless. But no one ever had a negative reaction to it. Makeup certainly is the better choice especially when you are doing full faces!

When I hear of artists using acrylics or tempera, I think most of them probably do it because they don't know about professional face paint.  I think it's because we call it "face paint" that it's confusing.  I'm surprised at how many of my customers think that I'm using actual paint on them.

i know alot of 'unprofessional face painters' that use acrylics...you see it alot at churches....however, i have as well done this when i first started out....much cheaper of course,,,,but not nearly as professional looking or beautiful...plus the colors dry very quickly and tend to crack on the face...i haven't ever heard of anyone getting a rash or anything....they are good if you just want to practice...i say, "break out the paints and let the kids have some fun"...with the acrylics of course....

I've been face painting since I was 18 and have used acrylic paint up until now and the only reason I've switched as I keep getting called a "so called professional" instead of a professional. I am a professional. I make a living off my art and that includes face painting. I have never had anyone have any problems with acrylic paint not in 20 + years, the worse thing I had happen is a a lady came back with a interesting sunburn pattern Smiley
I live in Texas and it's hot and humid here about 90% of the time. Acrylic doesn't run off with sweat. This new stuff I just spent way to much money on you get 1 drop of water on it and it's gone! Now I'll say that Snaz has better staying power then this Wolfe FX stuff I got. I may invest in some Snaz, I bought the pallet with about 48 colors of Snaz small amounts of paint, well a year ago. I am painting Monday and will see how it goes with the new stuff and the little bit of Snaz I have.
I love acrylic paint....this is going to be very hard for me to switch over.
I really want to know is acrylic paint being bad mouthed because the companies that make and sell the
" professional face paints" don't want artists using acrylic ? or is it really a health hazzard? now days seems everything is a health hazzard. I can tell you playing around with my new paints they stained my skin and made me itchy...never had acrylic stain my skin...well except when I bought some of that .50 cent stuff once and I always try it on me before it goes in my kit.
I buy high dollar acrylic 3 to 8.00 a tube.
I do like the things you can do with the slpit cakes and am slowy building a kit of splits and stuff...but like I said Acrylic paint is my first love and it will be a hard transfer for me.

It is odd how we all started out, about 20 years ago when I started dabbling I used the water colour sticks(maybe johnny boy) made especially for face painting I was never really happy with the texture or colours so I switched over to expensive water colour artist's crayons (caran d'arche) the colours were brilliant-and so many, they glided on smooth and were non-toxic you could buy them prepackaged or individually in art stores. They seemed to be very similar in principal to the face crayons and were very easy to use. Just before jumping into using snaz, paradise and wolfe I spent about a year using expensive artists water colour -water activated pencil crayons in a rainbow of colours that were lovely for fine details were non-toxic and added them to the crayons in my kit. (there is an idea I'd love to see-face paint in pencil crayons just dip in water and wow, perfect lines!) I never had a reaction either and as my business evolved to more people wanting face and body art I started doing online research and found that there really existed high quality, brilliantly coloured FDA approved -and very expensive face paint. I just never knew it existed until about 3 years ago. The use of sponges and the face paints has made a difference in the quality of my art.
I now carry insurance, can be confident when I tell parents the paints are safe and approved for skin, and I'm willing to keep learning new tips and techniques to be the most qualified and informed face artist I can be.

Yes I have seen kids react to acrylics, several times, watched at several different events (with diff painters) in HK. At least 1 was using good recogniseable brands.
Maybe the heat makes it worse?

Worst was a kid coming crying with his mum to my stall asking me to take it off as it hurt, the other woman had done a mask on him. Of course it wouldn't wash off... she ended up srcaping it away. I later saw him with a red raised zone wherever it had been and the mum puting savlon all over him.

Funny red areas where acrylics had been used and they wanted me to paint over (more commonly on arms) was normal...
